Virtual Fashion Locations

Here some pictures I’ve been playing around with. The idea is to take studio and runway fashion pictures and put them into a location context, creating a virtual fashion shoot location. In this case three shots from the Alternative fashion week runway now composed into the some shots I took at the Franca railway station in Barcelona.

The Leading Edge of Alternative Fashion Week

The 2010 Alternative fashion week lived up to this name by producing collections which where truly alternative. One of the spectators said to me “its like a bag of smarties, you just don’t know what’s coming out next”.
Well here is a summary of some of the more “Alternative” Collections.

Alternative Fashion Week 2010

The Alternative fashion week was held at Spitalfields market east London. This is showcase for new and progressive fashion designers many destined to become big names in the fashion industry in years to come.

There are stylist designs from the like s of Elif Muzaffer, Luasarcy, Cristiane Chaves and Amanda Wai Yin Ng. There are outlandish designs from the likes of Amy Day, Lisa Trans, Imanni Da Silva and Lady Lucie. And then there the designers who are, well just different like Richard Evens Lacey and his Skilt collect; and Wilfried Pletzinger original sports ware collection. But the great thing about the Alternative Fashion Week, there is a bit of everything, but something to make you take notice and wonder if this is the way fashion will be going in a year or two.

Danny Tang Back Stage

From London Fashion week, a short backstage video slide show from Danny Tang’s preparation of his Autumn Winter collection 2010.

Merging Concept Photography

A while back I did a trip to Los Angeles and took a number of pictures there, and like a number of photographers uploaded the pictures, selected a few for particular reasons and left the rest sitting on my hard drive. This week I went back and had a second look at some of them, and then had the idea to do a little photoshop merging, to create so interesting pictures. Here a few couple that I created.

The first is the merging of Los Angeles airport ( LAX ) and the science museum building in Valencia Spain which where designed by Santiago Calatrava. I describe this picture as Lufthansa at Valencia given the prominence of the Lufthansa aircraft in the picture.

The next two are merging shots from London Fashion Week, in this case from Nathan Jenden collection and shots from Huntington Beach. I really like the merging of fashion shots into different contexts.

Meadham Kirchhoff London Fashion Week AW 10/11 Top prise for unusual

The 3rd day of London Fashion Week, and I’m down in the Top Shop show Space (again), the Flower Cellars in Russell Street. By now I have the Top Shop routine well established, after each shoot all the photographers get thrown out so that we can queue in the rain to get back in again, its ok a chance to get a coffee and a bun.

So Sunday afternoon, Meadham and who? Was the general comment from the photographers pit, remember photographers are not fashion editors, how do you pronounce the second name? Now when doing runway shoots at fashion weeks you always have to be prepared for the unexpected or unusual, I mean we had Unique the previous day antlers and all.

Well Meadham Kirchhoff get the prise for the most unusual, this Autumn Winter collect was if nothing else different to all the other collections. No Fur and leather here, no risqué sheer transparent tops, although they did have the mandatory amount of black and grey. As the models walk down the runway its into professional take pictures mode, get the designs, grab the detail, don’t think too much about whether this is something to rush out and buy, just concentrate on getting good pictures. Although the back the mind is going what!!

Full set of pictures from Meadham Kirchhoff collection and other designers can be seen HERE.

Now, after the event I’ve Googled around to find out a little about the designers, usual stuff Central St Martin etc etc. I’m posting this comment at least a month after the event and there is not much in the blogsphere about this collection, clearly a lot of bloggers have gone into catatonic shock? Looking back at some of M & K’s previous designs there is some great stuff there. This collection was not like anything they had done before. I can only think that with this A/W collection they wanted to make a statement, get noticed, and surprise people. Well they sure did that, but I don’t know if it got the the publicity the wanted. Of course there is always the possibility that in terms of fashion trends they are out there at the bleeding edge, way ahead of everyone else?

The final comment from deep within the photographers pit, just as the show ended and the was that moment of silence when the music stopped came the announcement,

“Here ended the Yeman 2010 fashion week” ,

which just about sums it up.

Unique London Fashion Week Antlers and all

The Unique show at this years A/W London Fashion week was well ‘very unique’ Whilst squeezed in the photographers pit at the Top Shop show space at The Flower Cellars Covent Garden clicking away at the models as they walk down the runway I soon started to ask myself whether this was a style that would catch on? The antlers and the big wigs made for a good show, but as for the rest, I can’t see this being main stream fashion.

Full set of pictures from Unique and other designers can be seen HERE.

Mark Fast Plus size in the Top Shop Cellar London Fashion Week

The Top Shop show space in the flower cellars on Russell street at the side of Covent Garden is a straight place to have a runway presentation. The audience are sequenced in between the pillars and the models move around a U shaped runway. The initial walk down for the photographers is not very long.

Mark Fast was one of the designers presenting his Autumn / Winter 10/11 collect at the Top Shop show space. At least his collection was not black and grey and just to had some contrast there where a couple of plus size models. In this context plus size is relative and means UK size 12/14. The whole collection consisted of 30 designs a sample of which is shown, but the whole collection can be view HERE.

Todd Lynn Fur Leather and Janet Jackson at London Fashion Week

Todd Lynn’s collection at London Fashion week has been one of the most talked about. Very stylist with a lot of Fur and Leather, but in keeping with the A/W 10/11 trend of a lot of black and grey. Most of the collection seemed reasonably wearable although I can’t see many men going out with one of Todd’s coats with the enlarged fur shoulder pads. A full set of pictures from Todd Lynn London Fshion week collection can be view HERE.

The presentation at the BFC show space at Somerset house attracted probably the biggest A list celebrity of all the designer presentations when Janet Jackson was ushered in from the back stage entrance. Surprising sitting close to the end of the Catwalk where the photographers where located. At least I did not have pull the 400mm lens to snap a shot of her, I’m sure someone will tell me who the friend was she was happily chatting to.

Paul Smith Fashion at Claridges London Fashion Week

The Paul Smith London Fashion week collect was shown at Claridges ballroom. A great collect from Paul on the theme of country girl comes to London. From a photographers point of view the shoot at Claridges had its challenges. With a set of spot lights pointing directly at the photographer and another set low just over the photographers pit.

So taking a position too low at the front of the photographers pit results in back light models and spot lights in shoot. Taking a position at the back of the photographers pit and the camera in up in with the spot lights above the pit. The front standing row of the pit being the best place was completely taken by big video cameras.

All that said there are great shots of Paul’s Smiths designs, great colours and style. This was one of those shoots where it really paid to shoot raw rather then jpeg. At least there was enough dynamic range in the pictures to fade out the back lighting and bring in the detail at the front of the designs.
